USA: A new pictogram representation to facilitate the selection of gloves

Update 08.01.25

What are the new hand protection updates to the ANSI/ISEA 105 standard?

The ANSI/ISEA 105-2024 standard provides a comprehensive classification system for hand and arm protection, including gloves and sleeves, based on performance criteria essential for workplace safety. This updated standard ensures consistency and predictability in the selection of personal protective equipment (PPE), making it easier for manufacturers, employers, and safety professionals to choose the right protection for specific hazards.

This ANSI/ISEA 105-2024 standard introduces new marking requirements standardized in a pentagon-shaped pictogram with the representation of key protective properties, such as cut, puncture, and abrasion resistance.

  1. The first element, cut resistance, is rated on a scale from A1 to A9, with A9 representing the highest level of performance and A1 representing the lowest.
  2. The second element, abrasion resistance, is rated from 1 to 6, with 6 indicating the highest level of resistance. This element indicates the number of cycles a glove can withstand before being worn out.
  3. The third element, puncture resistance, is rated on a scale from 0 to 5, with 5 representing the highest level of resistance. This element measures the force required to drive a point (excluding needle punctures) through the glove.

Why the change in the American ANSI/ISEA 105 standard for hand protection?

The intention of this revision of the American glove standard is as follows: “This revision is linked to the evolution and development of materials, fibers, and design techniques that render these products increasingly effective and distinct from one another. This clarification was important to facilitate a more straightforward comparison of the performance levels of protective gloves and sleeves," explains Isabelle DUPUIS, Delta Plus North America Marketing Manager and ISEA board member.

The standard also incorporates specific language to demonstrate compliance with the designated performance classifications, aligning with ANSI/ISEA 125-2021 (American National Standard for Conformity Assessment of Safety and Personal Protective Equipment).

What is the impact of the ANSI/ISEA 105 revision for users of protective gloves?

The impact on protective glove users is significant, as these changes offer a substantial advantage in terms of enhanced clarity for professionals. This marking system is designed to assist users in evaluating the alignment between their gloves and their protection needs, considering the potential risks they are exposed to. The new pictogram thus functions as a purchasing guide, offering a clear reference point for individuals seeking protective equipment.
“From an employer's perspective, this precise marking system ensures that their PPE is compliant with current regulations. In the United States, strict compliance with legal requirements is crucial for liability purposes and due to insurance companies actions, both of

which play a pivotal role in mandating the requirement of suitable personal protective equipment (PPE).”
