Women's PPE: safety for everyone

More women are entering the workforce and taking on leadership roles, but protective clothing is still mainly designed for men. Variations for women or unisex versions are appearing: beyond comfort, ill-fitting equipment can in some cases put female workers at risk. Focus on suitable solutions.

Feminisation of the professions: women are entering sectors previously recognised as male-dominated

According to a study published in 2024 by the International Labour Organization, the European Commission and Eurofund, there has been a global and continuous process of significant growth in female labor market participation   since the second half of the 20th century, which has only accelerated since the beginning of the 21st century.
While women remain in the majority in the health and personal services, education, services and administration sectors, they are less present in the energy, logistics and construction sectors (2024 World Economic Forum study).

Although they remain in the minority in sectors traditionally considered male, their numbers are increasing in construction or the industrial sector, for example.

Several organisations are promoting this gender diversity:

  • in France, the collective Industri'elles is, for example, working to change the image of industry among young women and to attract them to the sector,
  • in the United States, WiM (Women in Manufacturing) is working to support, promote and inspire women in the manufacturing sector,
  • NAWIC in the United States and FEMCON in Europe are two associations that offer training dedicated to women wishing to work in the construction sector.
  • Finally, many companies - in all sectors - are also implementing CSR policies that include an inclusive component aimed at promoting gender diversity.

PPE often poorly adapted to the female form

Despite this evolution in job profiles, personal protective equipment (PPE), which is particularly used in these sectors, is most often designed for the male body type.

For women who have to wear this PPE, this means sacrificing some of their comfort at work, but it can also represent a danger in certain cases:

  • if a female employee puts on a helmet that is too large, it becomes unstable;
  • if she wears gloves that are too big, she loses dexterity;
  • if her sleeve is too long, she can get stuck in a machine;
  • if a suit is too loose, it may let through the harmful substance it is supposed to protect against in the context of a chemical risk.

In general, for all workers, poorly fitting protective clothing can be a source of distraction, discomfort and fatigue, thus increasing the risk of accidents at work.

The emergence of female PPE and unisex workwear

However, in certain sectors under pressure such as the construction industry, providing PPE specifically adapted to women could make it possible to broaden recruitment and attract new talent, while sending a strong signal of commitment to CSR.

Aware of the situation and the growing demand for a range of workwear and PPE for women, Delta Plus is also committed to offering unisex PPE:

  • adjustable helmets,
  • shoes ranging from size 35 to 47,
  • gloves ranging from size 6 to size 11,
  • harnesses from S to XXL,
  • etc.

Delta Plus also offers a few models of PPE dedicated to women: for example, a softshell jacket with a fitted cut or work trousers with shorter legs and wider hips adapted to the female figure. Their design takes physiological differences into account, for greater freedom of movement.

Delta Plus is particularly focused on the development of safety shoes for women. The female foot is not only shorter on average, but also thinner and more arched than the male foot. An unsuitable shoe can lead to falls, foot cramps and musculoskeletal disorders.
The right protective footwear is therefore a lever for improved safety at work, for the benefit of all.
